Accelerating Marin County’s Clean Energy Future

We are a community organization supporting initiatives that help Marin achieve its electrification goals.

Our Mission

The Marin Electrification Council is a community-based, citizen-led organization accelerating Marin County’s transition of vehicles and buildings away from use of fossil fuels. We promote local policies and actions that create a fair and just marketplace for electrification solutions—with the aim of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that are driving climate change, improving air quality, and enhancing public safety throughout Marin County.

Who We Are

Our coalition is comprised of more than 70 members across all twelve Marin jurisdictions, including lawyers, engineers, economists, scientists, writers, entrepreneurs, climate commissioners, and electrification experts. We monitor local, state, and regional policies and advocate for concrete steps Marin cities and towns can take on the path to electrification. We translate citizen concerns about climate change into actionable recommendations for local leaders—and we champion collaboration between government officials, developers and citizens to meet our shared goals.

What We’ve Accomplished

Since our founding in 2018-19 as the Marin/Sonoma EV Squad and the Marin/Sonoma Building
Electrification Squad, the Marin Electrification Council has:

  • Gotten all Marin jurisdictions to adopt streamlined EV charger permitting per AB 1236

  • Helped shape model building electrification and EV charger reach codes and successfully advocated for their adoption by six Marin jurisdictions

  • Advocated for, and contributed to updated Climate Action Plans for all Marin jurisdictions

  • Advocated for adoption of Climate Emergency Resolutions by most Marin jurisdictions

  • Partnered with Cool the Earth on the first-ever large-scale public EV charger reliability study, leading to national policy change

  • Made key contributions to development of the Marin Countywide Building Electrification Roadmap and Countywide EV Acceleration Strategy to help guide local actions

  • Actively opposed a state-wide moratorium on changes to building codes for new buildings and advised jurisdictions on how to preserve code flexibility when the moratorium was adopted

  • Worked with developers to assure thousands of new dwelling units in Marin County are all-electric and also advocated for appropriate EV charging infrastructure.

  • Published dozens of Opinion pieces and Letters to the Editor in the Independent Journal and other publications in support of building electrification and the transition to EVs

  • Monitored and provided input to local and regional governmental agencies to promote building electrification and the transition to EVs

  • Worked with owners and managers of existing multifamily housing to identify and pursue opportunities for building electrification and EV charging

  • Worked to promote EV charging in underserved communities

  • Successfully engaged high school students in taking climate actions at their schools

  • Promoted public EV chargers and municipal fleet electrification among Marin jurisdictions

Electric Vehicle Adoption

We support the expansion of widely accessible EV charging infrastructure, advocate for municipal fleet electrification, and conduct community outreach about EVs to accelerate the transition to electric transportation.

Building Electrification

We promote the shift from gas to electric appliances in homes and buildings, especially for space and water heating, support green building codes, and help residents know where to access rebates and financing programs.

Policy & Advocacy

We work with local jurisdictions to develop and implement climate action plans, building electrification roadmaps, and EV acceleration strategies that make sustainable choices easier for everyone.

Community Education

We facilitate access to available rebates, tax credits, and programs, with special attention to supporting underserved communities and ensuring equitable access.
